New Port South - A Review
The John Hughes Files
September 9, 2001
Alexander Rubinow's Opinion
I saw it in Northbrook at a saturday night showing at 7:05,....i dragged my
mom to it cuz i don't have any friends that live around here any more, and
myself and her were the only two people in the theater. i think it will be
pulled come this thursday. The only john hughes connection to it was that it
was filmed in illinois, it took place in a high school, and one of the
character's (a girl) was named Kameron. Other than that, i didn't care for
the music that was written by John Hughes III, and The final scene made no
sense, i mean it was really out of character the way the rest of the
trajectory of the film went. Other character's seemed out of place. And
while it did present a girl named amanda (amanda jones of SKOW), and
rebellious youth, and some people i had seen on the Second City stage in
Chicago in the past year or two, it is not the john hughes i know and love.
Only the Lonely was a much finer picture (as far as Hughes produced pictures
go). This film was cold and bleak, and although i expected another reach the
rock (and i was happy that it was not as poorly done), hughes needs to wisen
up, and go back to 1991, and then go back some more, and realise that the
pictures he made between 1982 and 1991 were much finer than anything he wrote
for disney or the sequals to home alone, or even that lousy excuse..just
visiting. i'm dissapointed. that's all. i want him to come out of his
slump, but i am not sure he will.
anyhow, those are my thoughts.
publish them if you want.
this movie was a dissapointment.

PS, disney didn't advertise because they knew it was not worth the money to
advertise. and all the theaters misspelled it as Newport South, when it is
clearly written on the poster and on all the shirts in the film as New Port
South.
