Virgil Bassett
Virgil Bassett, 82, of Strathcona, MN died on Monday, September 27, 2010 in Sanford Health Palliative Care Center at Fargo, ND.
Virgil Franklin Bassett, the son
of William E. & Georgia May (Williamson) Bassett, was born February 13,
1928 at Somerset, Texas. He grew up and
attended school at Devine, Texas. He
served as Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served during WWII and later
during the Korean War where he was a section leader with a heavy machine gun
unit. He married Bertie Wiley after a whirlwind courtship on July 28, 1955 at
Corpus Christi, Texas. Virgil and his family lived several places over the
years; Texas, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Saudi Arabia. He worked for Union
Carbide and later for the Exxon Corp.
They retired to Victoria, Texas for many years and also lived in
Pennsylvania for a short time before moving to Strathcona,
MN in November of 2007.
He is survived by his wife of 55
years—Bertie Bassett of Strathcona.
Daughters—Carla (Dave) Janes of Strathcona, MN, Sheila Webel of Harrisburg, PA., & Lisa (James) Leopold of
Seguin, TX.
Grandchildren—Sarah
Hoffman, Katie (Brandon) Schuster & Dakota Leopold. Step-Grandchildren—Bridget Cassell & Matt (Beth) Janes. Great-grandchildren—Kylie
Sites & Karlie Kramer. Step-Great-grandchildren—Tyler
Berg, Emily Johns, Haylee & Darius Schuster, Noah
& Rebekah Janes.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
Sisters—Donie Warrick, Willie Eola
Bassett & Bertha Chandler.
Brothers—E.M. Bassett, Ollie Bassett, Leonard Bassett, W.L. Bassett
& Earl Bassett, all were of Texas.
Funeral Service was be held on Saturday, October 2, 2010 in Grace Evangelical Church of Strathcona with Pastor Robert Ludwig, officiating. Chris Hamness was the vocalist and Pat Ludwig was at the organ. Military Flag Detail was handled by the Moen-Zimek Post 88, American Legion of Greenbush.
Interment will be in Memory Gardens at
Victoria, Texas.
Arrangements were with Gieseke Funeral Chapel of Greenbush, Minnesota.
