Sanford Olson

     Sanford Olson, 86, of Greenbush, MN died on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 in LifeCare-Greenbush Manor in Greenbush. 

     Sanford Lloyd Olson, the son of Albert & Lizzie (Bentow) Olson, was born November 23, 1923 in Huss Township, Roseau Co., MN.  He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith.  He grew to manhood on the family farm and attended country school.  In the year 2000, he received his honorary GED that was awarded to local W.W. II Veterans.

      Sanford served in the 41st Infantry Division in the U.S. Army.  He trained in the Philippines and was assigned to post WW II MP Duty in Japan. 

     He married Carolyn Svir in 1953.  They made their home in Greenbush and raised 3 daughters.  He was employed by Herb Reese Construction Co. and in 1960 he began a job at Roseau County Co-op Assn. where he worked until he retired 25 years later.

     During his retirement he enjoyed the company of his good friend Hattie Meier.  They were able to do some traveling throughout the country visiting family and friends.  Sanford’s favorite pastime was driving though the countryside, admiring the land and crops.  He loved the change of seasons and always enjoyed harvest time. He had a great sense of humor and he loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

     Sanford considered it a great honor to serve his communities.  He was commander of the American Legion in Greenbush 1970-72 and 1988-90.  He was also commander of the V.F.W. in Badger from 1990-92 and 2006-07.

    Sanford is survived by 3 Daughters: Marguerite (Larry) Henke of Zimmerman, MN,  Patricia Engebretson of Lake Park, MN & Sandra (Dean) Eggermont of Moorhead, MN.

     6 Grandchildren: Steven (Tami) Henke, Terran Henke, Macrae (Carylanne) Henke, Melissa (Kyle) Anderson, Jeremy Truscinski & Jessica Truscinski.   4 Great-grandchildren: Spencer, Samantha & Tyler Henke & Cale Anderson.   His Sister, Myrtle Bertilrud of Greenbush, Sister-in-law, Maxine Olson of Thief River Falls, MN and several nephews & nieces and extended family.  His friend and companion, Hattie Meier and her children, Janet (Earl) Overlee & Dean (Brenda) Meier and their families.

       He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carolyn & his brother Clifford Olson.

       Funeral Services were held on Saturday, March 13 in Bethel Lutheran Church of Greenbush with Pastor Mark Mathews, officiating.  Linda Sovde was the organist and Arlene Jenson was the vocalist.  Casket Bearers were Alvin & Allen Bertilrud, Jeffrey Olson, Dean Meier, Earl Overlee & Tim Truscinski.  Honorary Pallbearers were Manvil Dvergsten, Maurice Bertilrud, Arvid Williamson, Clayton Kjos, George Didrikson, David Frislie, Raymond Svir & Ernie Gieseke.  Interment was in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery of Greenbush with Military Honors provided by Members of The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Arrangements were with Gieseke Funeral Chapel of Greenbush.
