Rubie Mekash

Rubie Marion Mekash passed away on January 11, 2015, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND, at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 5 days.

Rubie was born July 6, 1928, in Barnett Township, Roseau County to Tom Hendrickson and Hulda (Miller). She grew up and attended school in Greenbush. She was baptized in the Lutheran Faith and confirmed at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Greenbush, MN.

She worked at Nelson Café in Roseau, MN and several other jobs throughout her life.

She was united in marriage to Ernie Mekash on September 6, 1945 in Badger, MN. In February 1946 they moved to a farm west of Badger, MN and in 1948 purchased a farm east of Greenbush where they farmed. In 1992 they moved to town and purchased a home in Greenbush.

Rubie enjoyed having coffee with her friends, playing cards, traveling, working with her flowers, knitting, and reading books. She took pride in her home, baking, cooking, and raising her children. She enjoyed working alongside her husband on the farm and enjoyed their golf cart rides during their retirement years visiting their neighbors. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family and friends were a priority in her life and especially attending her grandchildren’s school activities.

Rubie is survived by her husband Ernie of 69 years; 2 children, Coleen Krohn of Wahpeton, ND, Dale (Shellie) Mekash of Greenbush, MN.

9 grandchildren: Chad (Vera) Mekash, Tammy Blawat, Melony (James) Wicklund, Holly (Cole) Hokana, Jake (Arielle) Krohn, Ashley (Joe) Lambert, Kaley (Jakob) Heggedal, Toriana, and Carly Mekash.

10 great-grandchildren, Gary and Jesse Mekash, Luc, Eric, and Isaac Wicklund, Braxton and Mia Hokana, Augustus Krohn and Baby Krohn, and Matthew Lambert.

Daughters-in-law, Karen Lambert of Hendersonville, NC and Bonnie Harrington of Hamilton Square, NJ, 2 sisters, Harriet Froemke of Seattle, WA, Gail (Alen) Szczepanski of Argyle, MN, 1 brother, Glen (Loretta) Hendrickson of Greenbush, MN; 2 sisters-in-law Arlene Mekash of Roseau, MN and Marcy (Lowell) Mortrude of St. Cloud, MN and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son Major Gary Mekash, son-in-law Steve Krohn, 1 brother, Thorphan Hendrickson, 1 sister, Bev Penas, 1 nephew, Michael Mekash, 2 nieces, Joanne and Mary Jo Mekash, 1 sister-in-law, Anita Mekash and 3 brother-in-laws Duane Penas, Ferdie Froemke, and Emil Mekash.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 10:30 AM in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church of Greenbush with Father George Noel and Pastor Mark Mathews, officiating. Music was provided by Jeanne Novacek, Michelle Kern & Jody Kirkeide. The Reader was Eric Wicklund. Altar Servers were Timothy & Evan Peppel. Gift Bearers were Rubie’s great-grandchildren. Eucharistic Ministers were John & Connie Stanislawski. Casket Bearers were Keith Szczepanski, Alan Truscinski, Clayton Troskey, Shannon Hendrickson, Terry Novacek, Rick Penas & Mark Johnson. Honorary Pallbearers were the Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren.

Burial was in Blessed Sacrament Cemetery of Greenbush with funeral arrangements by Gieseke Funeral Chapel of Greenbush.
