Hazel M. Salte


         Hazel M. Salte, 89, of Longview, Washington, died on Thursday, March 24, 2011.

      She was born April 8, 1921, in Strathcona, MN to Lewis and Anna Stone. She attended schools in Strathcona and Middle River, MN.

      Hazel had many great memories of working in her Dad’s service station at Strathcona, pumping gas, checking oil and washing windows. It was unusual at that time for a young woman to be doing that type of work. She later moved to California and worked there during World War II.

      She and her husband, Maynard, were married while he was on leave from the Navy on February 20, 1943. They lived happily married for 63 years. In 1950, they moved to Longview, Washington and after Maynard retired, they spent 22 years wintering in Mesa, Ariz.

      Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard; a son, Joe Salte; and a nephew, Bob Salte.

      She is survived by a sister, Jan Cummings of Carlton, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Doris Hallquist of Thief River Falls, Minnesota; her longtime friends, Virginia Coleman and Faith Ruhland; numerous nieces and nephews in Washington and Minnesota; and her beloved dog, Buddy.

      Hazel was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church at Longview. A memorial celebration was held there on April 2, 2011. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery at Strathcona, MN in the summer of 2011.

      Arrangements were by Columbia Funeral Service of Longview, WA and local arrangements were with Gieseke Funeral Chapel of Greenbush, MN.
