Learning To Drive

Transportation was probably the biggest challenge we faced in our sponsorship of
these wonderful young men. But it proved to be very manageable because of the
spirit and dedication of volunteer drivers from our congregation. I called them
Angels On Wheels. People were happy to drive the young men around because, and I
quote what so many told me, "I get so much more from these guys that I am giving
to them" and "I feel so uplifted when I am with them" and "the kids look forward
to our time with them" and "they make my heart melt."
We started out with six young men in June 2001. We had to transport them to Adult
Education classes and to their jobs. Initially, there were 20 volunteer drivers
filling about 45 time slots from 5:30am until 11:30pm. Then we added another
six men and another six men and there were eighteen by October. With much
trepidation, we faced the humongous task of getting all 18 of them to and from
school and work. But, with God presiding, it was a breeze! There were 60 to
70 volunteer drivers filling 138 time slots. Some very brave members of our
congregation patiently taught the first group of young men to drive, and by
November three of them were proud licensed drivers. At that time, these three
drivers were helping with 34 time slots. Now itÂ’s March, and there are seven
licensed drivers who help by getting their brothers to and from school and work. The volunteer drivers are only doing a few runs to help out. All in just nine short months! Thanks be to God for his many blessings on this ministry!
It is so rewarding to see the progress that has been made and the success that the young men are enjoying. Coordination of transportation got to be quite hectic at times, but I would do this all over again if the opportunity presents itself.
